Tragedy of maturity

My mother used to constantly question me, why? Why did it take me so long to mature? Or rather to develop a sense of maturity, surely I was not incapable. The question plagued me endlessly. But I've come to the realization, that I've always had a sense of maturity, but unlike others I saw that we have a lifetime of maturity, I saw what maturity entailed, and I refused it. I attempted futilely to hold it at bay but its caught up with me. I've been mature all along, I just didn't want to be.
